Geography at Chapel Hill

Vision

At Chapel Hill, we believe geography should inspire curiosity, deepen understanding of the world, and empower pupils to think critically about their place within it. Through engaging, meaningful learning experiences, we aim to nurture informed, responsible global citizens who appreciate the diversity and complexity of the planet.

Intent

Geography is an investigative discipline that enables children to develop a secure understanding of key concepts, knowledge and skills. At Chapel Hill, we provide a broad and balanced geography curriculum that fosters curiosity and a lasting fascination with the world.
Our curriculum is designed to equip pupils with knowledge of:
  • Places and people
  • Environmental resources
  • Physical and human processes
  • The formation and use of landscapes

In addition, geography supports pupils in developing transferable skills such as enquiry, analysis and critical thinking. These skills enhance learning across the wider curriculum while contributing to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning, our geography curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressive across all year groups.
We provide opportunities for children to engage in rich, real-life experiences, including:
  • Exploring food, music and traditions from different cultures
  • Investigating local and global environments
  • Developing fieldwork and enquiry skills

Geography is taught discretely on a weekly basis and further enriched through cross-curricular topic work. Learning is recorded in books at least twice per half term, with additional lessons focusing on practical, enquiry-based activities that develop geographical skills and understanding. An annual Geography Week provides a whole-school opportunity to celebrate, share and deepen learning within the subject. Assessment is ongoing and purposeful. Low-stakes assessments at the beginning and end of each unit allow teachers to:
  • Measure progress
  • Identify misconceptions
  • Plan next steps in learning

Impact

  • Demonstrate secure understanding of geographical concepts
  • Apply enquiry and analytical skills confidently
  • Show enthusiasm and curiosity about the world

As a result, pupils leave Chapel Hill well-prepared for Key Stage 3 and equipped with the knowledge, skills and awareness needed to engage thoughtfully with the wider world.
