PSHE at Chapel Hill
Vision
At Chapel Hill, we believe PSHE is essential in preparing children for life in an ever-changing world. We aim to develop confident, responsible and respectful individuals who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to manage their lives effectively and play an active role within their communities.
Intent
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced programme that supports pupils’ personal development, health and wellbeing.
We aim for all pupils to:
- Develop an understanding of the world around them
- Build the skills needed to form positive relationships
- Make informed, healthy and responsible choices
- Develop resilience, independence and self-awareness
Through our curriculum, we empower children to take ownership of their wellbeing and to navigate challenges with confidence. Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is fully integrated within our PSHE provision, ensuring pupils receive age-appropriate and relevant learning.
Implementation
PSHE at Chapel Hill is delivered through the Discovery Education Scheme of Work, ensuring a progressive and comprehensive approach across all year groups.
Curriculum Structure
From September 2024, all year groups follow the same half-termly themes:
- Autumn 1: Happy & Healthy Friendships
- Autumn 2: Our Similarities & Differences
- Spring 1: Caring & Responsibility
- Spring 2: Families & Committed Relationships
- Summer 1: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind
- Summer 2: Coping with Change
This whole-school approach ensures consistency and allows key values, behaviours and vocabulary to be reinforced across the school community.
Teaching and Enrichment
- PSHE is taught weekly by class teachers or appropriate practitioners
- Learning is recorded at least once per half term
- PSHE is embedded across the wider curriculum and school life
Additional enrichment includes:
- Weekly assemblies (phase-based), focusing on Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL), British Values, and cultural or religious events
- Specialist visitors and external agencies, including the fire service, police, coastguard and community groups
- Themed weeks and days, such as Safer Internet Day, Anti-Bullying Week and Mental Health Awareness Day
These experiences strengthen pupils’ understanding and provide real-life context to their learning.
Impact
Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils in developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to succeed both in school and beyond.
Through PSHE, pupils:
- Develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem
- Learn to manage risk and make informed decisions
- Build positive relationships and work collaboratively
- Understand how to maintain their physical and mental wellbeing
By the end of their time at Chapel Hill, pupils will have a strong understanding of themselves and the world around them. They will be equipped with essential life skills such as perseverance, self-reflection, teamwork and conflict resolution.
A well-delivered PSHE curriculum ensures that these skills are transferable across all areas of learning and life, enabling pupils to become thoughtful, responsible and active members of society.
