Chapel Hill Primary School

Modern Foreign Languages – Spanish at Chapel Hill

Vision

At Chapel Hill, we believe learning a modern foreign language should inspire curiosity, confidence and a passion for communication. We aim for all Key Stage 2 pupils to develop a strong foundation in Spanish, enabling them to communicate effectively while fostering an appreciation of different cultures and global diversity.

Intent

Our Spanish curriculum is designed to provide all Key Stage 2 pupils with the opportunity to develop key language skills in:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading

Through structured progression, pupils build their confidence and competence in using Spanish. They also explore cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries, including:

  • Food
  • Music
  • Traditions and customs
  • Currency
  • The Spanish alphabet

We aim to broaden pupils’ understanding of the wider world while developing their ability to communicate in another language.

Implementation

Spanish at Chapel Hill is delivered through a progressive and engaging approach that encourages regular practice and real-life application.

Curriculum Expectations

  • Spanish is taught weekly, with sessions of up to 30 minutes
  • A strong focus is placed on speaking and listening, with opportunities integrated into:
    • Registration time
    • Early morning activities

Enrichment Opportunities

  • An annual Spanish Day in the Summer term, where pupils participate in themed activities to deepen their understanding of Spanish language and culture

Practical Application

Children are encouraged to use Spanish in everyday school life, for example:

  • Ordering lunches in Spanish
  • Using simple conversational phrases

This provides meaningful opportunities to practise and embed language skills beyond the classroom.

Impact

Our Spanish curriculum ensures that pupils develop confidence and enthusiasm for language learning.

Through Spanish, pupils:

  • Build confidence, self-esteem and a sense of achievement
  • Develop the ability to learn and apply new languages
  • Improve memory, phonics and pattern recognition in language
  • Gain an appreciation of different cultures and ways of life

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have a secure foundation in Spanish, equipping them with the skills and motivation to continue language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond, as well as the confidence to engage with Spanish-speaking cultures in the wider world.
